One-Kilometer Walking Limit during COVID-19: Evaluating Accessibility to Residential Public Open Spaces in a Major Saudi City

Considering the significance of physical activities in maintaining and mental well-being, several nations made exceptions during COVID-19 lockdowns allowed residents to walk outdoors, but with time distance restrictions that varied across countries. This study aimed identify if such regulations provided equal access public open spaces (POS) engage activity lockdown. Using a mixed research method (secondary descriptive data, field observations, spatial analysis), we assessed one-kilometer walking limit imposed on six typical existing neighborhoods Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. We find was effective providing accessibility, four urban factors ensured effectiveness distance: small scale residential districts comparison long-imposed distance; presence neighborhood parks near main local streets; distribution throughout districts; absence major highways physically isolated districts. Notably, related distances future pandemics should not be generalized all cities; instead, they based availability relatively good POS provisions easy community members enhance social sustainability.
